Tuesday, January 21, 2003 — Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin

Riverside Geyser We got up and went straight down to breakfast because we weren’t sure what the hours were. When we got there we found we had plenty of time because they serve breakfast until 10:00 and it was only 8:00. After breakfast, we stopped at the Visitor Center to check the prediction board and plan our day. Since nothing was due to erupt until the afternoon, we went back to the room to shower and get caught up on trip reports. Around 11:00, we heard Beehive Indicator called, but we didn’t even get our boots on before Beehive itself was called. It was about a 2 minute indicator, but we later found out from talking to the ranger at the Visitor Center that they just happened to look out and see the indicator, so they don’t know how long it had been erupting before Beehive went. Around 1:00, we headed out to see Riverside, which was predicted for 2:15. Riverside erupted at 2:13, so they did a pretty good job with the prediction, since no one had actually seen a Riverside for 3 days. We ate our lunch of prime rib, which was left over from our Sunday night dinner. We froze it in our refrigerator at Gardiner and it seemed to keep fairly well in our small soft-sided cooler.

Castle Geyser After lunch, we headed back from Riverside. As we neared the main bicycle path, we noticed Grotto Fountain erupting and when we made the turn, we saw Grotto was also erupting. We watched them play for awhile and then turned up the path past Giant to Grand. Giant was putting out a couple of spurts that got above the cone, Bijou was playing, but not much else was going on. Oblong had erupted earlier in the morning, but we could still see where its runoff had melted all the snow around the pool. Beauty was full and Chromatic down. Grand was predicted for 5:15, but it was only 3:30. We took a break there anyway and watched Turban erupt twice. We decided to see if we could catch another Castle, which was predicted for 4:15. We got there around 4:00, expecting another long wait. Castle made up for its rudeness the day before by erupting as soon as we got ready to sit down. I commented to Lew that it was giving a nice burst and the bursts just didn’t stop.

After Castle, we were getting cold, so we headed back to the cabin to get ready for supper. Just down from Castle, several bison had taken up residence on either side of the path. We stopped to see what they would do. We decided they were busy eating so we started to move down the path. Some others who had stopped behind us said they would follow the people in the green jackets with red Kelty packs. That was us. As we passed the Inn, Old Faithful erupted. Only about 10 people were watching it.

I stopped by the Snow Lodge Coffee Shop to confirm our plans with Matthew. He said Doug had stopped in earlier and they made arrangements to meet at 7:30 in the Firehole Lounge. As soon as we got in the cabin, another Visitor Center prediction was confirmed when we heard Grand called right at 5:15.

Doug caught up with us as we walked back to the Snow Lodge. We were soon joined by Matthew. We ordered appetizers and drinks and were finally kicked out at 11:00 p.m. The night had flown past; we all couldn’t believe it was that late. We immediately went to bed as soon as we got back to the cabin.
