The was a rumor out of Missoula that bears or a bear out in the Pelican didn't hibernate this winter, but stayed active feeding on wolf kills. Kerry didn't buy this. Below is his response:
"I am not sure where your friend received his information, but it is not correct. All of our radio collared bears remained in their dens all winter, and we have not observed or had any reports of observations of bears or bear tracks this winter. We did run a remote camera in Pelican Valley for a couple of years. However, that was a temporary project and the camera was removed last summer. Even when we had the camera operating, we never documented any bear activity during the winter months December-February). We usually get our first evidence of bear activity early in March, so the first reports could come in any day now."
