The current house is small. It is about 1370 sq ft of main floor living space. This is a bit misleading as you will see later. We designed a much larger house but have initially downsized as we do not want to carry a second mortgage. We decided to build the smaller version and then expand it when Deb retires and we sell our current house. The house we are building now will conform to the covenants and will serve its purpose as a vacation home until we make the permanent move. The following graphic is an early version the the final design. There have been some changes in the garage but still follows current plans.

The current house will contain the kitchen wing and the eventual garage. We will use the "garage" as the bedroom, living room and office. The interior will be unfinished with the exception that we will have wallboard for the bedroom walls. We will finish the kitchen and mud room in the kitchen wing. The bathroom is temporary and will be moved when we add the other two sections of the house. That room will then become a pantry.

Eventually we will have a full basement under the kitchen, family room and master suite sections of the house. We have the full basement under the kitchen wing but it is also unfinished. It will function as a utility room and storage. There is no basement under the "garage".
We will build a detached garage to conform to the covenants. When we finish the final house the garage will be moved to the area that is initially the bedroom, etc. and the detached garage will be used to store the tractors, etc. and as a workshop. We hope to finish everything without taking out a mortgage but that is dependant on what we are able to clear with our current house. The value has dropped about 30% over the past two years but is going back up now.
